Blue-Eyed and Odd-Eyed Siberian Cats
a rare traditional heritage
Blue eyes in a Siberian cat are not a mistake. They are a rare genetic heritage, preserved in a few traditional lines. At Chatterie de Nice, we have followed them through several generations since 2018.
Sometimes a single glance is enough to leave a lasting memory.

Blue and odd eyes in our lines since 2018
Nearly eight years of observation
For nearly eight years, since Olivia joined our cattery, blue and odd eyes have been present in our breeding lines.
Over the years, we have observed the transmission of this characteristic through several generations and followed the development of their descendants, now living with families and in catteries in France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Russia, Japan, Canada and other countries.
We simply share the experience gained during these years through our cats, their descendants, their pedigrees and the health follow-up of our lines.
Many visitors, breeders and owners ask about the history of our blue-eyed and odd-eyed traditional Siberian cats. This page presents our experience and observations gathered over nearly eight years.
Where do our lines come from?
Russian and European origins
Our foundation lines originate from Siberia, Russia, where we acquired our first traditional Siberian cats from established breeders. Our lines trace back to original Russian and European bloodlines, the foundation of the traditional Siberian breed.
We preserve traditional Siberian genetics: no Neva Masquerade, no crossbreeding.
Blue and odd eyes have been naturally observed within these lines and have been transmitted through several generations. To date, the exact genetic mechanism responsible for this characteristic has not yet been identified.
This trait may represent an old characteristic that remained discreet within certain Siberian populations before being observed and preserved by a small number of breeders.
Why are blue and odd eyes so special?
Rare, and not a defect
Blue and odd eyes in Siberian cats are rare. They are not a mistake: they are a natural genetic heritage, preserved in a few traditional lines.
For families in Asia, Europe and beyond, these eyes often become the reason to choose a Siberian cat.
We do not select for the eyes alone. Health, character and beauty come first, and every cat is considered as a complete Siberian.
Each blue-eyed kitten carries a story, and a look that never leaves you indifferent.
Silver shaded and silver tabby with blue eyes
A rare combination
In our traditional lines, silver shaded and silver tabby cats may also carry natural blue eyes: a rare combination, with a luminous coat and a striking gaze.
Our colours include brown tabby, black tabby, blue silver tabby, silver shaded, golden tabby, golden shaded, sunshine and white. Preserved, not created.
We keep the natural type of the traditional Siberian: strong bones, expressive eyes, a natural coat and a balanced temperament.
All our cats are LOOF-registered, the official French pedigree registry.
Do blue-eyed traditional Siberian cats have health problems?
What we have observed
To date, we have not observed any particular health issue associated with this characteristic in our own lines.
Our breeding cats are followed regularly by our veterinarian, and the hearing of our white kittens is checked before departure.
Research is still ongoing, and we remain attentive to new scientific findings.
Why are there different opinions?
We share observations, not debates
This characteristic still gives rise to discussions among breeders, feline clubs and enthusiasts. Everyone is free to have their own opinion and to propose their own hypotheses.
For our part, we prefer to share what we have observed over the years through our cats, their descendants and their pedigrees. We respect different sensitivities and let scientific research continue its work.
No other breeds are used in our breeding programme. Our cats are traditional Siberians, and cats from our lines have pedigrees registered with various international feline federations.
To date, the exact genetic origin of blue eyes in some traditional Siberian cats has not yet been fully clarified. Breeders, feline clubs and researchers from several countries continue their observations and studies.
