Blue-eyed Siberian cat in a winter landscape — legend of the Ice Cats

An ancient tale whispered by the winds of Siberia…

Where might the legend of Siberian cats with blue eyes have come from?

A legend told by people. A phenomenon created by the nature of Siberia.

This story is a legend. But the phenomenon it evokes belongs to reality: the nature of Siberia gave birth to cats with eyes the colour of the winter sky.

An ancient Siberian legend tells that some cats were not born like the others…

When the spirits of the North still dwelt in the forests of Siberia

Long, long ago, when the world was quieter and the snows of Siberia were whiter than the clouds, the spirits of the North lived deep in the heart of the taiga.

As ancient as the mountains, as wise as the eternal cold, they protected the balance of the winter world.

And alongside them lived strange guardians with eyes the colour of the winter sky.

The silence of winter grew so deep that even the stars seemed to listen…

The Ice Cats

These cats were not born like other living beings.

The spirits of the North shaped them from the first frost settled on the pine branches, from the silence of snowstorms and from the cold light of the moon.

When winter reached its deepest stillness, they gave birth to new guardians.

The breath of the wind gave them life, and the stars of the polar sky gave them blue eyes, like the ancient ice of Lake Baikal.

“They were not simply cats.
They were the memory of winter.”

— An ancient Siberian legend —

The legend gives them words.

The nature of Siberia gave them these eyes.

It was once said that on certain winter nights, when the snow fell without a sound, one could still glimpse their white silhouettes at the edge of the Siberian forests…

Then came a time when even the wind seemed to remember…

The last gift of the spirits of the North

But the world was changing.

Little by little, the noise of humans reached the depths of the taiga, and the ancient spirits of the North began to fade away.

Before falling asleep forever, they entrusted their last magic to their Ice Cats and sent them to live among humans.

Since then, these cats sometimes appear with their icy blue gaze, their silent gentleness and that strange warmth that can soothe hearts.

And when one of these cats enters a home, it brings with it a fragment of the old silence of Siberian winters…

Perhaps they never truly left.

This legend is one we carry with us at Chatterie de Nice.

Our blue-eyed and odd-eyed cats are the guardians of this memory.

Beyond the legend, the reality

You may call it a legend, a tale or a story from the winters of old.

But words do not create what they tell.

Long before them, the nature of Siberia had already created this phenomenon: Siberian cats with eyes the colour of the winter sky.

The legend may change over time. It can be told in a thousand ways.

But the phenomenon itself is real. It exists independently of our words.

The legend belongs to people.

These eyes belong to the nature of Siberia.
